Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 fights off Battlefield 3 to take the number one spot in the UK All-Formats charts, with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim swooping into second place.

In the least surprising development since the sun came up this morning, Call
of Duty Mdoern Warfare 3 has demolished all competition to take the number
one spot in the UK All-Formats Chart. Intial reports suggested that Modern
Warfare 3 had sold “just under 2 million copies” in the UK, less than
predecessor Black Ops in the same period of time. However, the figures were
then said to be unverified. Either way, the latest Call of Duty was another
remarkable success. Activision announced that in the US and UK alone, Modern
Warfare 3 had sold 6.5 million copies and generated over $400m in revenue,
making it the largest entertainment launch of any kind in history. The
game’s good too, with the Telegraph calling it “a shining example of
refinement and improvement.” Sprawling RPG The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim had
to settle for second place, despite recording the fifth biggest launch of
the year so far.
Perhaps a surprise entrant in the top ten in this CoD dominated week was Moshi
Monsters: Moshling Zoo, with the popular children’s web game making the jump
to Nintendo’s DS. Wii Party also soars back into the top ten from 38th
place, presumably as new Nintendo Wiis get snapped up in time for Christmas.
Next week: It’s a huge week for games this week with several big, new
titles flying onto shelves. They are: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword,
Super Mario 3D Land, Assassin’s Creed Revelations, Halo: Combat Evolved
Anniversary, Saints Row: The Third, Need for Speed: The Run, Disneyland
Adventures, Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Lego Harry
Potter: Years 5-7 and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
As such, expect an almost entirely remodelled top ten. However, my prediction
is that Modern Warfare 3 will fight off the barrage to remain at the top of
the pile.
